The Western Shoshone of Nevada ancestral lands are sites for Nuclear Testing, and Yucca Mountain will be the future site of America's largest nuclear waste dump. Yucca Mountain is a sacred mountain to the Western Shoshone people; it is also known to be sitting on top of several fault lines, and atomic waste stored there could leak into the groundwater in the surrounding farm lands. The US government has never honored the Treaty of Peace and Friendship signed in 1863 at Ruby Valley between representatives of the Western Shoshone Nation and the United States. It was essentially an agreement by the Shoshone to share their lands with the white people, yet nothing in the Treaty indicates a transfer of title was intended. Almost all of their ancestral lands are currently governed & leased by the Department of Interior's Bureau of Land Management.
