Indigenous
Awareness
This is an outreach and educational program
for schools and colleges where Earth Rhythm representatives
and Native Peoples' speak in regard to current environmental
justice and human rights issues as well as give a greater understanding
of life today for Native Peoples. Cultural appreciation is woven
into the program, supplemented by video, documentary, and other
visuals.
Over the course of the next two-three years,
curriculum will be developed regarding environmental justice
and human rights issues on the reservations, and with other tribal
communities in the Americas.
The purpose of "Indigenous Awareness"
is to educate the youth on life today for indigenous people and
to bring the school system into the new millennium with their
curriculum. Most educational units have focused primarily on
the past and very few give attention to today's struggles and
life styles.
Equally important is to inspire much needed
support in protecting and preserving the diversity of indigenous
culture. We have found that the youth are eager to become involved,
and thus Earth Rhythm representatives will establish meetings
with the students to involve them in particular Earth Rhythm
projects and campaigns.
Living
Cultural Journeys
Earth Rhythm's intention is to make learning
alive through a school program that takes students to the reservations
and Indigenous communities throughout the Americas to experience
the richness, diversity and wonder of the original peoples. The
program is designed so students can interact with the youth,
learn from traditional elders, connect in meaningful ways to
the land, particularly with sacred locations, and partake in
ceremonial life. Earth Rhythm will help provide funding for students
to experience and appreciate cultures in their present state
as well as to gain an understanding of their incredible and extended
past and the significance of their future. In addition the program
will foster other ways of viewing life, the world, and will help
young people gain a sense of the interconnectedness of all of
creation.
Eco-Cultural
Tourism
It is Earth Rhythm's intention to develop
eco-cultural tourism on the reservations and with tribal communities
as a source of cultural pride and economic opportunity. All programs
will involve the full participation of the indigenous community
at every level to benefit the community as a whole. The programs
will be developed with sensitivity and a spiritual base. Respect
to tribal traditions and values as well as the surrounding environment
will be of utmost importance. Earth Rhythm will support each
program until it becomes self-sustaining. Indigenous ownership
of the project is essential.
