Honour Fiji is a transformational
journey in honor of the great Cultural Legacy of Fiji while promoting
stewardship of the land and water. A strong focus is on the youth,
empowering them as keepers of their traditions, to participate
in the movement for sustainability and positive change in the
global arena, and to reach their highest potential.
In the Spirit of Peace and Friendship,
both Fiji and international youth participants will receive stewardship
training and dedicate themselves to service for Fiji and our
Oceans aboard the AlVEI. Out of Nelson, Zealand, the Alvei, a
Main T' gallent Schooner, is a non-profit co-operative under
the expertise of Captain Evan Logan. The Alvei has committed
to the HONOR FIJI JOURNEY for the 2012 sailing season, June,
July, and August. Working with experienced crew, the Alvei, also
offers the opportunity to learn the traditional arts of a sailor.

HONOUR FIJI JOURNEY ITINERARY 2012
June 8th - August 2nd
HONOUR FIJI JOURNEY will commence on
the WORLD OCEANS DAY CELEBRATION in Suva at the University of
the South Pacific with music and dance presentations by numerous
youth organizations, with the ECONESIAN SOCIETY serving as the
lead NGO. The Alvei and participating youth will depart the next
day up the coast north of Korovou at Moon Reef Marine Reserve,
hosted by Takalana.
The voyage and the experiences of the
youth will be made into a half hour weekly TV series with MAI
TV for the duration of the journey. This is an opportunity for
young people, particularly Fijian youth, to have a voice in regards
to environmental/marine issues and inspire and empower their
peers to step up and take action in their communities and for
their planet. The TV show will be both educational and adventurous,
exploring current ocean issues in various island and offshore
locations in the Yasawas, Taveuni, Somosomo Strait, and Vana
Levu.
The young participants will receive
skills training, such as scuba diving and coral propagation,
taking on underwater assignments as in the removal of over populations
of Crown of Thorn Starfish. The program will showcase sustainable
projects that are working and allow for viewers to gain insight
into the traditional cultural and maritime practices of the Fijian
people. The youth will be front and center, engaging with elders
and community leaders, talking to marine specialists, doing their
own research, learning from the Captain and crew and meeting
the daily challenges of living and working on a sailing vessel
from a by-gone era.
